Deng Adut at Parliament House 2016

Wednesday, 30 November 2016 -at-6:00 PM AEDT

Deng Adut

Deng Adut. Child Soldier. Refugee. Lawyer.

Torn away from his family and conscripted as a child soldier at the age of 6 before leaving Sudan to arrive in Australia as a refugee where he studied law with the hope of helping those from similar backgrounds, Deng Adut’s fascinating life story is one of trauma and redemption, both heart-breaking and inspiring.

After arriving in Sydney, Deng found work at a service station where he learnt English, essential to the studies he would then complete, first an Advanced Diploma of Accounting at TAFE before attending the University of Western Sydney, from which he graduated with a Bachelor of Laws.

Today, Deng works representing other refugees and ensuring their legal rights are protected from a law firm in Blacktown in Western Sydney.

Deng shot to fame in 2015 when University of Western Sydney included him in an advertising campaign that has since received more than 2.5 million views. The advertisement, which offers an abridged snapshot of Deng’s transformation through education from child soldier to refugee lawyer, illustrates how one man has changed the lives of many others.

On 26 October 2016, Deng became a published author with the launch of his first book, Songs of a War Boy. This autobiographical work details Deng’s inspirational story, overcoming overwhelming adversity to join the legal profession and dedicate his life to protecting the disenfranchised.

Deng also runs the John Mac Foundation, named in honour of his brother and, more recently, on 7 November 2016 Deng was named as the NSW Australian of the Year, beating many other admirable candidates. This places Deng in the running to become Australian of the Year in January 2017.

We invite you to join us to hear Deng speak on 30 November 2016 at NSW Parliament House. The event, hosted by Alex Greenwich MP and Gennarosity Abroad, will detail the great work and large impact that small charities, like Gennarosity Abroad, can have at the community level.
